My friend Shari, from the great food blog My Judy The Foodie, lost her mother to breast cancer. Her mother is Judy, and the blog is Shari’s way of getting to know her mother even better through her recipes.
One of these recipes is Judy’s Banana Chocolate Chip Loaf. It’s a rich, moist banana bread that could easily be breakfast or dessert (I’ve eaten it as both this week!). Shari came up with the genius idea of using her mother’s recipe to raise money for research into the disease that killed her.
The best part is that you don’t have to raise the money – Shari has found an anonymous corporate donor for that part. You just get to bake! Every time someone uploads a picture of one of these loaves to Facebook, one dollar will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of America (up to $1,000).
Here’s how it works:
- Go to BananasForBoobies.com. Sign up to receive the recipe, and then you’ll get to see it.
- Bake Judy’s Banana Chocolate Chip Loaf, and package it up with a Bananas for Boobies sticker (you can download them from the Bananas For Boobies site – I just printed them out on regular paper and taped them to my loaves).
- Take a picture, and share it on the Bananas For Boobies Facebook page (or email it to email@example.com and Shari will upload it for you). This will not only raise $1 for research, but will enter you in a drawing to win an iPad!
That’s it! You can upload one picture a day – each one will get you an entry in the drawing and raise money!
The recipe is really fantastic. I was a bit wary at first, because it’s different from any banana bread recipe I’ve ever made (foaming sour cream? What?!?). And I’ve made a lot of them. My freezer looks like this, so that I always have bananas handy for baking:
I had some sticking problems with my loaves, so I would suggest that you line the bottoms of your pans with parchment paper, then butter the paper and the sides of the pans. Other than that suggestion, follow the recipe – I promise you won’t be disappointed! Besides, baked goods made for charity always taste better. We really enjoyed it when it was still warm and the chocolate was gooey.
