Until a few years ago, when I broke my toe four hours before having to get on an airplane with both of my kids, I didn’t know that urgent care centers existed. I arrived in Kansas City in a lot of pain, after hours, and figured that I was in for a long wait in an ER waiting room. But my dad said that my injury wasn’t serious enough for an ER, and he took me to an urgent care center.
Knowing when to go to an urgent care center versus an Emergency Room is really valuable information. Urgent care centers aren’t designed to handle life-threatening injuries and illnesses, so you could waste valuable time going to an urgent care center if you really need to be in an Emergency Room. And if you go to an ER when you could have gone to an urgent care clinic, you might spend more time waiting than you need to.
Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care centers has made a really handy graphic for you to reference about when you should go to an ER, and when you should go instead to an urgent care clinic. You can see it here.
Overall, anything you think might be life threatening needs to be looked at in an ER. Chest pain, poisoning, seizures, and severe burns are some of the things that need an ER.
But things like flu, minor sprains, strains, and fractures, and infections can be looked at in an urgent care center. You can take a look at the entire list here.Flu, minor sprains & strains, & infections can be looked at in an urgent care center. Click To Tweet
Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care centers have on-site X-rays and labs, and can refer you to a specialist if further treatment is needed.
Open seven days a week with extended hours in most locations, you’ll be treated with a superior level of care.
